  • Illuminated manuscript. Cutting. Antiphoner. Historiated initial from an Antiphoner. Nascimbene, Nicolò di Giacomo di, artist. Production Place: Italy, Bologna. Circa 1370- circa 1380. Parchment, Illumination, penwork, ink, gold. 380 x 265 mm, initial 320 x 205 mm, three four-line musical staves ruled in red ink and the first line of a fourth stave, on the reverse three lines of fragmentary text ruled in plummet and three four-line musical staves ruled in red ink. CONTENTS: The initial would have introduced the antiphon for first Vespers for the feast of St Thomas Aquinas, F[elix Thomas doctor ecclesie lumen mundi splendour Italie], which continues on the verso, [cande]ns virgo flore [mund]itie bina gau[det cor]ona glorie. Ps[almus. Laudate pueri]. DECORATION: Historiated initial formed of pale pink acanthus on gold ground and surrounded by two-sided borders of acanthus, foliage and gold balls: [F] St Thomas Aquinas teaching.
