About this image

Image data

  • The 'Bird Psalter'. Folio 51 verso. Vellum, 19 cm x 13 cm (tbc), circa 1280-1300 (tbc). Medieval. English. Notes: The psalter contains the names of several West Country saints and was probably associated with Winchcombe or Gloucester. It takes its name from the fact that it depicts some 27 species of birds. It may have been made for the marriage of Prince Alphonso (d.1284) heir of Edward I, to Margaret of Holland, since the arms of Holland occur in the manuscript.
