  • Illuminated manuscript. Cutting. Historiated initial from a Choir Psalter and Hymnal. Production Place: Italy, Umbria, Perugia. Parchment, gold, 495 x 415 mm (388 x 290 mm), on recto, 13 lines of text written on alternate lines, ruled in brown ink, and one three-line musical stave ruled in red ink, on reverse, 10 lines of text written on alternate lines, ruled in brown ink, and two three-line musical staves ruled in red ink. Circa 1475 to circa 1480. CONTENTS: On reverse, text from the hymn for Terce (attributed to St Ambrose), Nunc, Sancte, nobis spiritus, mens, sensus, uigor … paraclito regnans per omne saeculum. Amen., with antiphons in ferialibus diebus, Alleluia. Evovae. Deduc me domine. Evovae, continuing on the recto (original verso), Post pascha. Alleluia. Evovae, followed by Ps. 118: 33-35, Legem pone mihi … insemitam mandatorum tu; the initial introduced Ps. 118 and would have been n the verso of the original leaf. DECORATION: Historiated initial formed of inner staves of liquid gold surrounded by sections of solid colour, foliage and fruit on grounds of blue with intricate white highlighting and scalloped edging in brown ink, with partial borders of dense acanthus, fruit and flowers with punched gold discs: [L, 9 ll.], St Francis receiving the Stigmata, with halo of punched gold. ORNAMENTATION: Alternate red and blue voided initials [2 ll.] at the start of each verse, guide letters still visible.
