Image attached to C.26-1954

An image of A map-seller. Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, Saxony. With his right hand he holds out a map of the British Isles, in the lower proper right corner figures of Mercury and Britiannia with a bale of merchandize. Under his left arm he carries a white band box. On his back, slung from his shoulders by yellow straps, he carries a mottled-brown cabinet with nine drawers, on top of which is a black hold-all secured by a broad cream-coloured strap. Hard-paste porcelain, press-moulded, glazed, and painted in enamels and gilt, height, whole, 16.9 cm, width, 10 cm, circa 1750-1755. After a model of 1744. Production Note: This model was based on the first print of the third set of Etudes prises dans le bas peuple ou les Cris de Paris, issued in 1738, engraved by the comte de Caylus (1692-1765) after drawings by Edmé Bouchardon (1689-1762) . It is smaller than the first figure modelled after this engraving in 1744. Unusually, the map seller holds a map of the British Isles.
