Harvest Jug. Unknown maker, North Devon. On the front flanked by two unicorns and two birds, is a bust with the initials and date 'CL 1703/4'. Below the handle is a tulip, and, on the neck, flowers. Round the shoulders is the inscription 'now I am com for to supply youre workmen/when in haruist dry when they doe Labour harde and sweat/good drink is better for then meate: in winter time when it is coold/i Likewise then good drinke can hould: booth seasons doe the same require/and most men doe good drinke desire'. Earthenware/sgraffito ware, the body thrown, slip-coated, and incised under lead glaze, height, whole, 29.2, cm, dated 1703-1704.
