Sculpture/Bust. Short torso without arms. Virgin of Sorrows. Mater Dolorosa. Pedro de Mena (Spanish, 1628-1688). Smaller than life-size bust of wood, carved in several sections, and polychromed over a white ground, with inlaid glass eyes, hair upper lashes, and three applied tears. The sorrowing Virgin faces front. Her lips are slightly parted and she looks upwards slightly. A tear rolls down each of her cheeks and another has fallen onto the base of her neck. She wears a dull pale yellow dress and over her head has a dark blue cloak over another layer of fabric of a darker shade of yellow than her dress. The bust is attached to a shallow rectangular blackened wood plinth. Wood, carved in the round, in several pieces, and polychromed over a white ground, with inserted glass eyes and animal hair upper eye lashes; attached to a wooden plinth secured by two large wrought metal nails inserted through the bottom of the plinth upwards into the main body. Height, whole, 33.6 cm, width, whole, 31 cm, depth, whole, 19.8 cm, circa 1670-1675. Baroque.
