Korean vase with chrysanthemum design

Image attached to C.431-1984

An image of Vase with chrysanthemum design. Unknown pottery, probably South Cholla province, Haenam-gun, Chinsan-ri kilns. This vase has a long neck with flaring mouth opening like a morning glory and an ovoid body that tapers towards the splayed foot. It is coated overall with a brown iron-oxide wash through which horizontal lines are incised at the top and bottom of the neck, and a chrysanthemum scroll with fully-opened blooms round the body. The covering celadon glaze makes the design appear in pale green against a dark greenish-brown ground and shows a fine crackle. At the neck the glaze has shrivelled in the firing. There are sandy spur-marks on the footring. Stoneware, thrown, washed with iron-oxide, incised and celadon-glazed, height 28.0 cm, diameter, rim, 11.0 cm, diameter, foot, 8.6 cm, circa 1050-1150. Koryo Dynasty. Production Note: Vases of this type were probably used for flowers on the altars of Buddhist temples. This combination of overall iron-oxide colouring and incised decoration is extremely rare. Such vessels are believed to have been produced in Chinsan-ri, Haenam-gun, in the latter part of the eleventh century, before Koryo celadon reached its peak.
