Infant Hercules strangling snakes, by Francesco Fanelli (attrib)

An image of Sculpture/Figure. Infant Hercules Strangling Snakes. Fanelli, Francesco, possibly (Italian, 1577-1661/64). The infant Hercules kneels on his left knee, holding one snake in his left hand above his head, whilst pinning another to the ground with his other hand. On a rough base, hole in left side of head, in the snake held in the left hand, and in the left side of his body. Copper alloy, probably brass, cast, and chased, height, whole, 20.5 cm, length, whole, 12.5 cm, after 1630-before 1700. Notes: The goddess Juno sent snakes to kill the infant Hercules, but he strangled them and survived.
