Vessel, by David Roberts

An image of Contemporary Craft. Studio Ceramics. Vessel. Roberts, David (British, b.1947). Of elongated oval plan, with curved slides, rising higher at one end than the other, so that the rim slopes downwards in a gentle curve on that side, and then upwards slightly to the other side. The exterior is very dark grey, and is decorated with horizontal lines which echo the curvature of the rim, and create an optical illusion that the vessel has an inverted V-shaped channel on each side. The interior is greyish-white slip with deliberate grey cracks and numerous dark grey spots. Stoneware, hand-built, and raku glazed, height, whole, 28.5 cm, length, whole, 35.0 cm, 1998. Gift of Nicholas and Judith Goodison through the National Art Collections Fund.
