An image of Maiolica. Jug. Unknown maker, probably Italy, Tuscany, Siena. Shape 18. Pear-shaped body standing on a low, slightly spreading foot; the cylindrical neck expands towards the rim which is pinched at the front to form a lip; loop handle of oval section. On each side of the handle, there is a vertical row of Ss between two sets of three black vertical lines. The rest of the body is diagonally striped with green lines edged with black. Above and below are pairs of horizontal black bands, and, on the neck, a broad wavy green band with a black band above. The handle has two groups of horizontal black stripes with three dabs of green between them and a larger dab at its base. Buff earthenware. The interior and foot are lead-glazed yellowish-brown; the rest is tin-glazed pale buff. Painted in black and copper-green. Height, whole, 14.0 cm, diameter, base, 7.0 cm, width, at widest point, 9.4 cm, width, handle to spout, 10.3 cm, circa 1300-1400. Late Medieval.
