Studio Ceramics. Small Brown Bowl. Britton, Alison (British, b. 1948). Large, squat, slab-built vessel, rising from a flat round-pear-shaped base to a wider, more elongated opening at the top. The sides are formed from a single folded piece of clay joined at a sharp angle. The surface is textured and coated with slips, buff on the inside and buff and brown on the outside, then decorated with gestural marks in brown, red-brown and brown-black slip, sometimes enhanced by blue-black glaze. The sides are matt glazed; the rim is clear and blue-black glazed. The underside is flat and decorated, but unglazed. Buff earthenware, slab-built, painted with slips and glazed. Height 26 mm, width 19 mm, depth 26 mm, 1988.
