An image of Cambridge ale jug/water jug. Smith, Stephen (British). In the shape of a Cambridge ale jug, the body with sloping cylindrical sides and slightly tucked-in base and flat bottom. The narrow neck with plain moulded rings below a slightly everted rim. The broad handle is concave down the centre and joins the body near the base with a flat spatulate terminal. The sides of the body are matted and engraved with exotic birds and tropical flowers and foliage (including humming birds and passion flowers). The hollow handle was seamed down its length. The body was raised or spun, then the base neck and handle were soldered on. The body was engraved, and the interior gilt. Height, to the rim, 18.2 cm, width, overall, 17 cm, weight, whole, 845 g, 1874-1875. Aesthetic Movement. Victorian. England, London.
