Tea Caddy. Bateman, Peter. Bateman, Ann. Bateman, William. Production Place: London. Bright cut borders and engraved armorials. Silver; the oval body with two compartments, beneath a stepped and slightly domed cover surmounted by a stained bone pineapple finial on a silver cast leaf-shaped calyx. The lid is secured by a lock at the centre front, opposite a concealed hinge. The top and lower edge of the caddy have applied bands of reeding. The sides are decorated with a lower border of alternating roundels and leaves reserved in a striated band with narrow bands of engine turning above and below; the upper border is of bright-cut paterae, Vitruvian scrolls and foliage. The lid has borders of machine engraved decoration. Below the lock is a crest of a boar's head over the initials 'JML'. On the back is engraved a coat of arms, sable goutté argent, a canton ermine. The silver was flattened by rolling. The body was then cut from the sheet and seamed at the side. The cover was domed by raising. The decoration was then applied and engraved. Height, to the finial, 17 cm, width, across the base, 14.7 cm, weight, whole, 430 g, 1800. Neoclassical. George III.
