Silver/Tankard. Unknown, silversmith, Augsburg. The slightly convex sloping cylindrical sides embossed and chased with a formal pattern of strapwork, cherubs' heads, fruit and scrolls on a matted ground. The low everted foot has two reeded borders with a matted border between. The cover is stepped and slightly domed; the outer border is embossed and chased with straps and fruit, round an inner border of gadroons on a matted ground containing an inverted bell-shaped finial. The handle is cast with a winged caryatid. The thumb-piece is modelled as a shell between two scrolls. Silver-gilt, height, to top of finial, 16 cm, diameter, base, 10.7 cm, weight, whole, 532 g, circa 1590-1620. Mannerist.
