One of a pair of altar candlesticks. MAR.M.76B-1912: Altar candlestick. Unknown silversmith, Netherlands, Dutch. The pricket candlestick embossed and chased with cherubs, gadroons and foliage. Only the pricket and drip pan are silver-gilt. Thse are supported on a bell-shaped sconce, which is embossed and chased with a border of gadroons and leaves. The stem comprises two balusters - one inverted - each with a plain knop at the outer end and an acanthus leaf embossed inner end, meeting in a flattened gadroon and leaf embossed and chased knop. The bell-shaped foot is embossed and chased with a border of swags, leaves and ribbons above three winged cherubs with vacant cartouches between. The three ball feet are each surmounted by a claw with leaf capital. Silver and silver-gilt, wooden base, height, overall, 74.3 cm, diameter, base, 20.2 cm, approximate, circa 1650-1700.
