An image of Jews in the synagogue The Betrayal of Judas (?). Basan, Pierre François (French, 1723-1797). Reworked after Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (Dutch, 1606-1669). Etching, drypoint, black carbon ink on laid paper, height (plate) 72 mm, width (plate) 130 mm; height, sheet, 86 mm, width, sheet, 138 mm, 1648. 18th century impression. Hollstein suggests that the additions to state III are eighteenth century. Production Note: III/III. Notes: It has been suggested that this print shows the Betrayal of Judas, as Rembrandt shows Polish and Portugese Jews together in a single interior; in fact, both sects never mingled and worshipped in their own synagogues. Alternative Number(s): Hollstein (Dutch/Flemish); B126 III/III; 1969. Biörklund/Barnard; BB48-D II/II; 1955.
