Beggars receiving alms at the door of a house. Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (Dutch, 1606-1669). Etching, engraving, drypoint, black carbon ink on laid paper, borderline drawn around edge of sheet, height, plate, 165 mm, width, plate, 129 mm, height, sheet, 169 mm, width, sheet, 133 mm, 1648. Production Note: III/III. Later impression, perhaps reworked by Watelet. Signature and date masked or uninked. Notes(s): The date and signature were masked out on this impression, perhaps to suggest that this constituted a rare first state before Rembrandt etched his name. Middleton believed this to be the work of the widow of the publisher Auguste Jean, who reprinted Rembrandt plates in the 1820s. There is also a counterproof in the Fitzwilliam collection without the name and date - see AD.12.39-60.Alternative Number(s): Hollstein (Dutch/Flemish); B176 III/III; 1969. Biörklund/Barnard; BB48-C III/III; 1955.
