The Goldweigher's field, by Rembrandt

Image attached to 23.K.5-319

An image of The Goldweigher's field. Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (Dutch, 1606-1669). Etching, drypoint, maculature, white pigment, old retouches of white in sky, on laid paper, chainlines horizontal (24 mm), height, plate, 122 mm, width, plate, 321 mm; height, sheet, 124 mm, width, sheet, 325 mm, 1651. Production Note: Only state. Notes: According to eighteenth century sources, the print apparently represented a view of the country house and estates of the Amsterdam Receiver-General, Jan Uytenbogaert, the 'goldweigher' of the title. In fact, the panorama was taken from Het Kopje, a dune near Haarlem, and the estate shown belonged to Christoffel Thijs, one of Rembrandt's creditors. This impression is a maculature (an impression taken from the plate without re-inking); given the watermark and visible drypoint burr, it is likely that it is an early impression, taken at the same time as AD.12.38-246. Alternative Number(s): Hollstein (Dutch/Flemish); B234 Only state. Biörklund/Barnard; BB51-A Only state. Lugt; 932. Ash & Fletcher (Rembrandt watermarks); 36.D.b.
