An image of Jan Antonides van der Linden, physician. Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (Dutch, 1606-1669). After Tempel, Abraham Lambertsz. van den (Dutch, 1622/3-1672). Etching, drypoint, engraving, black carbon ink on laid paper, height, plate, 124 mm, width, plate, 102 mm; height, sheet, 124 mm, width, sheet, 102 mm, 1665. Production Note: V/V. Note: The sitter was a professor of medicine in Leiden from 1651, and Rembrandt was commissioned to make a posthumous portrait as a frontispiece to Linden's edition of Hippocrates. The print was based on a painted portrait of 1660 by van den Tempel (now in the Mauritshuis), but as the contract specified that the print should be engraved rather than etched, this print was not used for the book. Alternative Number(s): Hollstein (Dutch/Flemish); B264 IV/V; 1969. Biörklund/Barnard; BB65-1 V/VI; 1955.
