Arnout Tholinx, copy after Rembrandt

Image attached to 23.K.5-376

An image of Arnout Tholinx. After Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (Dutch, 1606-1669). Basan, Pierre François, publisher (French, 1723-1797). Etching, black carbon ink on laid paper, height, plate, 177 mm, width, plate, 147 mm; height, sheet, 177 mm, width, sheet, 147 mm, circa 1789-1810. Production Note: Copy after Rembrandt, probably commissioned by Basan. Notes: The sitter was at one point the Inspector of the Amsterdam College of Physicians, and this job title is often referred to in descriptions of this print. By the time Rembrandt executed his portrait in 1656, he had stepped down and ran his own medical practice. Jan Six became Tholnix's brother-in-law in 1654, which explains his connection to Rembrandt and perhaps his decision to commission his portrait. As originals of this print are so rare, several copies were produced; such copies were often used by Basan to accompany reprints from his collection of Rembrandts's copperplates. Although Pierre François Basan died in 1797, the collection of plates was kept and used by his sons until around 1810, and this impression could have been produced in this later period. Alternative Number(s): Hollstein (Dutch/Flemish); B284 Copy 1. Biörklund/Barnard; BB56-2 Copy 1.
