Wood and paling, two heads and a horse. Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (Dutch, 1606-1669). Drypoint, surface tone, black carbon ink on Oriental paper (Japanese paper?), height, plate, 108 mm, width, plate, 137 mm; height, sheet, 108 mm, width, sheet, 137 mm, circa 1650-1652. Production Note: Only state. Notes: One of three recorded impressions, all on thick oriental paper. Two impressions were in the Cambridge University Library collection, one of which was sold with the University Library duplicates at Sotheby's London, 2-3 April 1878, lot 388. Although included in Gersaint's 1751 catalogue of Rembrandt's prints, several scholars have questioned its authorship by Rembrandt, due to the variable quality of the studies in the print. Only the study of trees is comparable to Rembrandt's handling of drypoint landscapes of around 1652. Alternative Number(s): Hollstein (Dutch/Flemish); B364 (Attributed) Only state. Biörklund/Barnard; BB52-5. Lugt; 2475.
