Fritware posset pot with cheetah handles

An image of Islamic pottery, Minai. Posset-pot. Unknown potter, Iran, central Asia, probably Kashan. Shape: bulbous body with a cylindrical neck and plain rim, sits on a low foot ring. Opposing cheetah handles and angular spouts are attached to the upper body. Exterior: on the rim a dentilated pattern is painted in blue. On the neck an epigraphic band is painted in blue and is interspersed with turquoise leaves and red dots. On the body arabesques of turquoise half-palmettes, sketchy blue birds and red dots covers the surface. On the cheetah handles and the spouts continuation of the patterns from the body are present, except on the head of the animals, which are painted turquoise with black lines to indicate features. Glaze covers the surface to the foot ring where it terminates unevenly. Interior: on the neck an epigraphic band is painted in black. The surface is coated in a glaze but otherwise is undecorated. Fritware, wheel thrown and mould-made, coated in white glaze painted with red, blue, turquoise and black. Height, whole, 14.6 cm, width, whole, 20.7 cm, diameter, rim, 11.4 cm, diameter, base, 8.7 cm, weight, whole, 694 g, circa 1170- circa 1220. Seljuk.
