Bowl. Islamic pottery, Sultanabad ware. Unknown potter, Iran. Shape: deep, carinated bowl with ‘T’ shaped rim, sits on a low, wide foot ring. Interior: on the rim, a band of blue dots is framed by blue or black concentric lines. On the body lobbed arches contain a central tear drop cartouche, both these elements and the spandrels are filled with blue or purple curled leaves. Rectangular panels containing blue and black dots and dashes separate these arches. In the roundel a deer is reserved in blue on a background of further coloured leaves. Splashes of turquoise paint in the rim and body. Exterior: the rim is painted with dark blue above a band of curled leaves on the neck. On the body dots and vertical lines are enclosed on the lower body by concentric bands. Glaze covers the surface to the foot ring, with a thin covering on the underside. Fritware, wheel thrown, painted in blue, turquoise and black under a transparent white glaze, height, whole, 13.6 cm, diameter, rim, 27 cm, diameter, base, 10.2 cm, circa 1260-circa 1350. Il-Khanid.
