English border sampler, by Ann Calton

An image of Embroidery sampler/Border sampler. Calton, Ann. A border of alternating fleur de lys and stylized roses surrounds the main body of the sampler; a carnation is placed in each corner. The corners of the main body have a cherub at the top flower vases at the bottom. The main decoration is a large inscription which reads ' CHARITY/O Charity! / Thou principle of great Souls!/how glorious are thy/Works!/Thou createst a new World/in the /Moral and physical order./ Thou preventest a Deluge of/Indigence!/ thou Preventest a deluge of/Vice!/Thou throwest an immortal/ Guard round Virgin/Purity!/Thou recallest not the/Dead/ but thou givest Life and health/to the/Diseased/and the/ expiring/Ann Calton Royal Free Mason's School'. Embroidered with polychrome silks in cross and satin stitch. Both top and bottom are hemmed; the sides are raw and damaged. Length 56 cm, width 38.5 cm, after 1801 to before 1900. English.
