Textiles. Band sampler. Unidentified maker, Germany. Sampler depicting alphabets, square all-over patterns, a wreath with initials and animals. The top of the sampler has three horizontal bands containing alphabets and numerals. Beneath this is a large square flanked on either side by three smaller squares. The large square has a wreath, flowers and a small male and female figure worked in addition to the initials 'DM', 'MS' and the date 1727. The four smaller squares all have all-over patterns. The bottom band is made up of detached motifs (crowned peacock, deer, birds, stork) arranged around a large central design of a stylized flower vase. Linen, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, Florentine, tent, satin and rice stitch with a little pulled work. All the edges are hemmed and finished with buttonhole stitch. Length 33.25 cm, width 24.25 cm, 1727.
