Hojo Tokiyori. Gakutei, Yashima (Japanese, 1786(?)-1868). Surimono. Colour print from woodblocks, with metallic pigment and blind embossing, circa 1820-circa 1823. Ukiyo-e. Poetry by Matsunomado no Chie. Notes: From the series Katsushika nijushiko (Twenty-four Generals for the Katsushika Group). Hojo Tokiyori (1226-1263), succeeded his brother Tsunetoki as Regent in 1246. In 1256 he fell ill, shaved his head and entered the monkhood, retiring to the temple Saimyoji and leaving the succession to his six-year-old son Tokimune. After his retirement, he still retained influence and power. He travelled through Japan incognito to ascertain the general state of the people and the abuses of the administration. The famous story of ‘The Potted Trees’ resulted from his travels. In a fierce snowstorm he arrived with his companion at a humble cottage where they were fed a simple meal of millet. The fire was dying out and the master of the house fetched three old and precious dwarf trees - a plum, a cherry and a pine - and chopped them for firewood. Tokiyori later repaid this generosity by restoring to the man his estate that had been wrongly taken from him.
