Ono no Komachi. Hokkei, Totoya (Japanese, 1780-1850). Surimono. Colour print from woodblocks, with metallic pigment, mica and blind embossing; blackened red lead pigment in the drapery. c.1820s. Poetry by Gorotai Toshiyori, circa 1820-circa 1829. Ukiyo-e. Notes: The poem tells us that this blooming cherry tree, named Komachi after the famous court beauty and poet, is so elegant in the spring rain that all the other trees are eager to gaze at her with their opened buds (the Japanese word for ‘buds’, me, also means ‘eyes’).
