Ferryboat, by Totoya Hokkei

Image attached to P.361-1937

An image of Ferryboat. Hokkei, Totoya (Japanese, 1780-1850). Surimono. Colour print from woodblocks with metallic pigments and blind embossing (karazuri). Poets: Rokujuan Fukumaro; Shuchodo, circa 1830. Ukiyo-e. Notes: The two poems in this print suggest that this rural scene of people travelling on a ferry is set along the Tone River which forms the Northern border of present-day Tokyo. The woman seated in the centre is wearing a white turban-like hood, a garment for a travelling woman. The mountain in the distance is Mt Tsukuba. It was affectionately called Tsukuba Fuji for its elegant shape, and its double peaks were nicknamed as Nantai-san (male body mountain) and Nyotaisan (female body mountain). The first poem reads: ‘The East wind blowing from Tsukuba has highly enhanced the fragrance of plum blossoms; and Mt Nantai naturally stands higher [than the female Nyotaisan].’
