Kado, by Hotei Gosei

An image of Surimono. Kadô. Gosei, Hôtei (Japanese, active c.1804-1835). Colour print from woodblocks with metallic pigment and blind embossing (karazuri). Chûban. Signed: Hôtei Gosei hiitsu. Circa 1811-circa 1813. Ukiyo-e. Notes: From the series of Spring kyôka surimono entitled Shogei tsukushi (All the various arts), commissioned by the Go group (led by Yadoya no Meshimori). The group’s symbol (the character for five) appears in the title and on some of the fabrics. The print exists both with and without Shumman’s circular production seal. The variety of formats in the series (including square and long surimono) is typical of Shumman. The other arts depicted include calligraphy, koto and shakuhachi playing, painting, football and mathematical calulation. Here representing poetry are the Rokkasen (Six immortal poets) of the early Heian period. They were first grouped together and critically appraised by Ki no Tsurayuki in the tenth century, and often appeared in art and theatre.
