Figure group. Spring (from a set of the Seasons). Derby Porcelain Factory, England. Eberlein, Johann Friedrich, modeller, after (German, 1696-1749). The circular base has four scroll feet. The edges are decorated with two rocaille 'frills' and a scroll, and the top is strewn with applied flowers. Spring stands on her left leg with her right leg relaxed behind her, leaning back slightly, and looking to her left . She holds up two flowers in her left hand, and has her right over an openwork basket filled with multi-coloured flowers which is held up by a nude infant standing beside her. She has long brown hair partly in a chignon and partly hanging down her back, and decorated at the front with three flowers. Her arms and breasts are bare, and below them she wears a white tunic with a floral pattern, a yellow lining, and gold edges, which is help up by a gold strap over her left shoulder. A turquoise-green scarf is draped over her left upper arm, across her back and round her right side.The child has brown hair and eyes, and a red lips. The edge of the base is picked out in green, yellow, dark pink and gold, and the flowers are variously dark pink, red and yellow, and blue and yellow. Soft-paste porcelain, slip-cast, with applied details, lead-glazed, and painted in a little pale blue, turquoise-green, green, yellow, flesh, dark pink, red, brown, and grey enamels, and lightly gilt. The glaze has many black speckles. The unglazed underside has a large circular ventilation hole, and four patchmarks. Height, whole, 23.5 cm, width, whole, 11.2 cm, circa 1765 -1770. Rococo. Production Note: The figure was based on a model which belonged to a set of Seasons modelled by J.F. Eberlein (1696-1749).
