Illuminated manuscript. Cutting. Fragmentary leaf from an Antiphoner. Production Place: Italy. Parchment, gold, 367 x 230 mm, five fragmentary four-line musical staves ruled in red ink, five fragmentary lines of text ruled in plummet, circa 1390 to circa 1399. CONTENTS: On reverse (original recto), parts of the second antiphon for the psalms in the first nocturn of Matins for the feast of St Michael in the Roman/Franciscan Antiphoner, [Laudemus Dominum que]m laudant angeli [quem cherubim et] seraphyn sanctus sanctus sanctus [proclamant…] followed by the third antiphon, Ascendit fu[mus aromatum in] conspectu Domini de [manu angeli], followed on the recto (original verso) by the responsory to the first lesson, Fact[um est silentium in ce]lo [dum committeret bel]lum draco cum [Michaele archan]gelo. Audi[ta est vox milia milium dicentium salus honor et virtus omnipotenti deo]; the initial F, originally on the recto of the leaf, would have introduced the first responsory in Matins for the feast of St Michael (29 September) in a Roman/Franciscan Antiphoner for the Sanctoral. ORNAMENTATION: Red and blue parted initial [F, 4 ll.] with voided ornament and red and blue pen-flourished infill and extensions, following letters written in blue; red one-line penwork initial [A] with purple pen-flourished infill and extensions on reverse; capitals highlighted in red.
