  • Illuminated manuscript. Cutting. Historiated initial from a Gradual. Rapicano, Nardo (Italian). Production Place: Italy, Naples. Parchment, 168 x 167 mm, two musical staves ruled in red, two lines of fragmentary text, ruled in brown ink, circa 1480 to circa 1490. CONTENTS: On reverse, part of the introit for the Mass for the fourth Sunday after Easter, [Cantate Domino canticum novum, alleluia: quia mirabilia fecit Dominu]s, alleluia [ante cons]pectum gentium [revelavit justiciam suam, alleluia]; the initial C would have introduced the Introit. DECORATION: Historiated initial in blue and gold with scrolling foliate extensions on a square ground of solid gold, framed in green laurel: [C] King David kneeling, playing on a psaltery.
