An image of Illuminated Manuscript. Bening, Simon (Flemish, 1483-1561). Framed miniature containing crucifixion scene with border of devotional objects on coloured grounds, once at major text divisions in the original manuscript. Stabat Mater, Crucifixion with the Virgin and St John, Instruments of the Passion, column and scourges of the Flagellation, cockerel of St Peter’s denial, and empty tomb in border. One of six leaves from the Hours of Albrecht of Brandenburg. The six miniatures were among the many that once decorated the Hours of Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg (1490 – 1545), Archbishop and Elector of Mainz. The Hours was one of three manuscripts illuminated for him by Simon Bening (1483 – 1561), the most sought-after Bruges illuminator of the time. Parchment, framed illuminated area 175 x 125 mm, no text or ruling on reverse, Bruges, c.1522-c.1523.
