  • Illuminated manuscript. Cutting. Historiated initial from an Antiphoner or Gradual. Libri, Girolamo dai (Italian). Production Place: Italy, Verona. Parchment, 200 x 211 mm , reverse side obscured by paper mounts, traces of musical staves ruled in red ink and fragmentary text with ruling in brown ink on recto, circa 1490. CONTENTS: The initial probably introduced the text Viri Galilei, quid admiramini aspicientes in caelum? (Acts 1: 11), either the introit for the Feast of the Ascension, or the first antiphon at Lauds for the same feast. DECORATION: Historiated initial formed of complex foliate motifs with masks on a ground of solid gold: [V] Ascension.
