Illuminated manuscript. Cutting. Border fragment from a liturgical book made for Pope Pius V. Bonfratelli, Apollonio de, (Italian, op.1523-1572). Parchment, gold, 360 x 258 mm, circa 1566 to circa 1572. DECORATION: Full decorative border of architectural ornament in gold and colour inhabited by putti and caryatids with garlands, central image excised, medallions with images of the Host and Chalice, and a pillar and two scourges, the arms of Pius V supported by putti in the lower bar and in the lower right hand corner a square compartment with image of Christ's Descent into Hell.
