Chalice. Church plate. Unknown silversmith, Italy. The V-shaped silver bowl has an everted gilt rim and gilt interior. It rests on a copper-gilt calyx engraved with leaves. The copper-gilt hexagonal stem is enamelled in black with a pattern of leaves, and has two knops. The first is large with six lobes set with two engraved coats-of-arms and four religious plaques, which include Christ, the man of Sorrows, the Virgin Mary, a bishop and another. The smaller knop has a vertical band enamelled in black with the inscription 'AVE. MARIA. GRACIA. PERNA (sic). DOMINVS. STEC(VM)'. The low copper-gilt trumpet-shaped foot has a shaped circular spreading base with rim of twelve alternating semicircular and pointed lobes. It is set with six octagonal plaques enamelled in black of saints and angels, including the Virgin Mary, St. Peter, St. Paul, an angel, possibly the Archangel Gabriel, and two other saints. Silver, silver-gilt and copper-gilt, raised, cast, soldered, embossed, chased, engraved and enamelled, height, to rim, 19.4 cm, diameter, base, 12.9 cm, diameter, rim, 10.1 cm, circa 1400-1450.
