  • Illuminated Manuscript. Antiphoner. Carthusian use. Latin. Gothic bookhand (textualis). Parchment, i paper flyleaf + 153 fols. (foliated i – lxxii, lxxv – lxxxii, lxxxii (sic) – cliii in contemporary red ink) + i paper flyleaf, 484 – 490 x 342 – 350 (414 x 242) mm, 10 long lines of text with 10 four-line staves of music, ruled in plummet and crayon. BINDING: Late 16th or early 17th century, brown leather over wooden boards, sewn on 6 supports, blind-tooled open panel design, brass cornerpieces and metal shoes at bottom of upper and lower covers, 5 brass bosses on each cover, two straps with brass clasps on lower cover, two catchplates on upper cover, parchment tabs for main and some lesser text divisions; modern endbands, spine and strap repairs by the Cockerell Bindery, 1982. CONTENTS: fols. 1r – 153v Temporal (Advent to Easter Eve). DECORATION: Five historiated initials [4 – 6 ll.] formed of interwoven branches and stylized acanthus, and accompanied by partial strewn-flower borders, frequently compartmentalized, for major feasts: fol. 1v First Sunday in Advent, [A, 6 ll.] Daniel in the lions' den; fol. 31r Christmas Day, [I, 4 ll.] Adoration of the Child, Annunciation to the Shepherds in border; fol. 61r First Sunday after Octave of Epiphany, [D, 4 ll.] David penitent; fol. 84r Septuagesima, [I, 4 ll.] Creation of birds and animals; fol. 96r First Sunday in Lent, [E, 4 ll.] Temptation of Christ. ORNAMENTATION: Initials [2 ll.] in blue with red pen-flourishing, red with violet pen-flourishing or brown with brown pen-flourishing, occasionally with first word of text or devotional symbol on scrolls within letter for lesser text divisions; alternate red and blue one-line penwork initials.
