  • Illuminated manuscript. Miniature from a Psalter. William de Brailes (English). One of six miniatures from a Psalter. Gothic bookhand (textualis). Parchment, miniature 196 x 123 mm, inlaid in a modern parchment leaf 250 x 170 mm, c.1230-1250. DECORATION: Full-page miniature on gold ground ornamented with incised lines and punched dots, with partial blue inner frame patterned in white and black, and gold outer frame outlined in black: Last Judgement with Christ enthroned in mandorla at centre, trampling on a lion and a dragon, with angel above him holding scrolls inscribed VENITE BENEDICTI and [DISCED]ITE MALEDICTI, pair of angels below sounding trumpets to raise the dead, and Mouth of Hell at the bottom. Subsidiary scenes in semi-circular compartments and mandorlas (clockwise from top to bottom): Angels with instruments of the Passion, including cross inscribed VULNERA V DEI PIA CRUX ET PASSIO XPI and SUNT MEDICINA MEI VULNERA V DEI; Apostles, including St Paul seated with sword; St Michael rescuing from amongst the damned the illuminator William de Brailes who is identified by the inscription on his scroll W DE BRAIL’ ME FECIT; St Peter, with key, descending from heaven to hail the Blessed; Apostles with the Virgin kneeling in supplication.
