  • Illuminated manuscript. Miniature from a Psalter. William de Brailes (English). One of six miniatures from a Psalter. Gothic bookhand (textualis). Parchment, trimmed miniature including corner medallions 182 x 112 mm (frame excluding medallions 168 x 106 mm), inlaid in a modern parchment leaf, c.1230-1250. CONTENTS: MS 330.vi First verse of Ps 1 inscribed in white and red display capitals above recumbent figure of Jesse, the rest of Ps 1 and the first two verses of Ps 2 continue on reverse. DECORATION: Full-page miniature in dark blue frame ornamented with red dots and interlaced bands of white and gold ornamented with punched dots: Tree of Jesse, with King David, the Virgin, Christ and seven doves symbolising the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, with kings and prophets on either side in semi-circular compartments, identified by the names on their scrolls (Ezekiel, erroneously shown with a crown, Solomon, Hezekiah, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, holding scroll inscribed … IDERIS … DANIEL, and St John the Baptist, holding scroll inscribed ECCE AGNUS DEI), with medallions incorporated in the frame, showing musicians playing the knee-viol, psaltery, harp and hurdy-gurdy, with the opening words of Ps 1 in display capitals on alternate blue and pink panels above the sleeping Jesse: BEAT[US] VIR Q[UI] N[ON] ABIT IN CONSILIO I[M]PIORU[M] ET IN VI[A] PECCAT[ORU]M N[ON] STETIT ET IN ATHEDRA PESTILE[N]CIE NON SEDIT.
