  • Illuminated Manuscript. Cutting. Ornamental initial from a Gradual. Parchment, 240 x 220 mm, two fragmentary musical staves ruled in red ink and two lines of fragmentary words ruled in brown ink on reverse, contemporary folio no. 3 in red ink on recto. Production Place: Italy, Umbria, probably Perugia. Circa 1500. CONTENTS: The initial would have opened the Introit of the Mass for Tuesday of Holy Week, parts of which survive on the verso: N[os autem gloriari oportet in cruce Domini nostri Jesu Christi in quo est salus, vita, et resurrectio nostra per quem salvati] et liberati [sumu]s. Post Pascha. Allelu[ya]. ORNAMENTATION: Gold initial [N, 2 ll.] with a vase and foliate scroll on blue ground within a gold frame, and floral and acanthus border.
