Netsuke/katabori. Miwa, maker, Japan. A sarumawashi (monkey-trainer) clad in a robe, his head covered, seated and grimacing with pain as the monkey climbing on his back pulls at his right ear. He grasps the monkey's paw with his right hand as he tries to release the monkey's grip. Himotoshi at the back amid his robes. Dark wood, finely carved, height, whole, 3.9 cm, width, whole, 3.4 cm, circa 1700-1800. Edo Period (1615-1868).
