Mitsumata Wakarenofuchi (Island off the mouth of the Sumida river). Hiroshige, Utagawa (Japanese, 1797-1858). Colour print from woodblocks. Ôban. Signed: Hiroshige ga. Publisher: Uoei (Uoya Eikichi). Date seal: Snake 2 (2/1857). Censor’s seal: aratame. 1857. Ukiyo-e. Notes: No. 57 from the series Meisho Edo hyakkei (One hundred famous views of Edo), in the section for Summer. A view from the east bank, near Mannen Bridge, over the widest stretch of the Sumida river towards Mount Fuji. The name Wakarenofuchi - ‘dividing pool’ - referred to the mixture of fresh water and tidal water from Edo Bay (out of the view to the left). In the distance is the entrance to the Hakozaki Canal. The island the left of was filled with the mansions of feudal lords (daimyo). The area in filled with reeds had been the site of an artificial island constructed in the 1770s and forming one of the main pleasure districts of the city until its destruction in 1789 as part of the governments reforms. The boats in the foreground are laden with rice, sake and cotton. An alternative printing has a differently coloured cartouche and red instead of yellow along the top of the clouds.
