Illuminated manuscript. Cutting. Leaf from a Dogeâs Commission. Mannerist Master. Production Place: Italy, Venice. Parchment, gold, 223 x 159 mm, circa 1559 to circa 1567. CONTENTS: Commission issued by Doge Gerolamo Priuli (1559-1567), appointing Renier Vitturi to the post of Proveditore of Gambara (near Brescia). DECORATION: Full-page miniature with half-length figure of Renier Vitturi praying before a vision of the Crucifixion, set in a full historiated border with sections of formal ornament, an Annunciation (outer corners of the upper margin), the Lion of St Mark (top centre) and the arms of the Vitturi family (lower border), the border painted in chiaroscuro gold on a dark red ground. ORNAMENTATION: The first four lines of the text written in gold epigraphic capitals on verso.
