Cartonnage mask of the steward Tjay

An image of Mummy Trappings/Mummy Mask. Cartonnage Mask. This mask belonged to the steward Tjay, it is composed of layers of linen and plaster forming an idealised face. This type of mask was placed directly over the wrapped head of the corpse. Painted face with eyebrows, eyes, mustache and beard detailed in black; eyes wide, outlined in black, with an elongated inner canthus and a blue fish-tailed cosmetic line; pupils black; ears made of plaster. Production Place: Egypt. Find Spot: Beni Hasan; tomb 275. Cartonnage, linen, plaster, painted, height 27.5 cm, width 19 cm, 2055- 1985 B.C. Eleventh Dynasty. Middle Kingdom. Production Note: At Beni Hasan in this period corpses were not fully mummified but simply wrapped in linen and plaster.
