Plate. The Battle for the Breeches. Unidentified Staffordshire Potter. A man and woman quarreling over a pair of breeches. Lead-glazed earthenware, circa 1660-1700. English. Notes: The central design of 'The Battle for the Breeches' was probably derived from a woodcut which appeared on numerous broadside ballads during the 17th century, for example, 'The Jolly Widdower: or A Warning for Batchelors' in the Pepys Collection at Magdalene College, Cambridge.
