An image of Illuminated manuscript. Cutting. Miniature from an Antiphoner. Cortese, Cristoforo (Italian, op.1360-1371). Production Place: Italy, Venice, Bologna. Parchment, gold, 260 x 370 mm, three lines of text ruled in pale brown ink and three four-line musical staves ruled in red ink on reverse. Circa 1425 to circa 1435.
CONTENTS: The image introduced the responsory for the first Matins lesson for the feast of Corpus Christi, Im[m]olauit [haedum multitudo filiorum Israel]; on the reverse (the recto of the original leaf), Ps. 2, Cum invocarem (the middle psalm of the first nocturn preceding the first Matins lesson), and the antiphon for this psalm, Communione calicis quo deus ipse sumitur. DECORATION: Large miniature of the Last Supper, accompanying an ornamental initial and surrounded by two-sided foliate border. ORNAMENTATION: Initial [I, 2 text lines and 2 musical staves] formed of stylized foliage and acanthus on burnished gold ground, with the remaining letters of the word (Imola) and the accompanying musical notation in burnished gold leaf on blue ground; on reverse, pink initial [C, 1 text line and 1 musical stave] with foliate infill on burnished gold ground.
