Fuku, from the Montoku Jitsuroku, by Yashima Gakutei

Image attached to P.322-1937

An image of Fuku, from the Montoku Jitsuroku. Gakutei, Yashima (Japanese, 1786(?)-1868). Surimono. Colour print from woodblocks, with metallic pigment and blind embossing. Copy A., circa 1820-circa 1823. Ukiyo-e. Poetry by Fukunoya Uchinari. Notes(s): From the series Honchoren honcho nijushiko (Twenty-four Japanese examples of filial piety for the Honcho group). This print is from a group of copies after surimono of the 1810s and 1820s, printed and published in the early 1890s by Tsumura Isakichi in Akashi, near Kobe. It is printed on slightly different paper from the others in this series exhibited here. The printing is careful but rather flat and hard, and lacks the subtlety of the originals. Such copies were probably intended to sell to foreigners. The story of the girl Fuku and her parents comes from the ten volume Montoku Jitsuroku (Actual Records of Montoku), dating from the period of the Emperor Montoku (850-858)
