Image attached to P.318-1937

An image of Rokujo Hogan Tameyoshi. Gakutei, Yashima (Japanese, 1786(?)-1868). Surimono. Colour print from woodblocks, with metallic pigment and blind embossing, circa 1820-circa 1823. Ukiyo-e. Poetry by Bunpoen Masayo and Bunposha Sonomi (?). Notes: From the series Katsushika nijushiko (Twenty-four Generals for the Katsushika Group). Tameyoshi was father of Minamoto no Yoshitomo and grandfather of the famous Yoshitsune. His son fought against him in the Hogan war and vanquished him in 1156. However in the following year he gave him refuge from the emissaries of the Emperor who refused to forgive him. The Emperor sent Kiyomori (see the next print) to Yoshitomo with the message that either Yoshitomo was to behead his own father or Kiyomori was ordered to do so. Yoshitomo chose the first course as the most honourable, and Tameyoshi was beheaded.
