IDENTIFIERS ----------- id: 110751 accession number: T.20-1938 DATE AUDIT ---------- created: Saturday 6 August 2011 updated: Tuesday 18 July 2023 DESCRIPTIVE DATA ---------------- object type: Linen mixed band sampler made up of four joined pieces embroidered with polychrome silks in satin, eyelet, cross and double running stitch. Linen thread is worked in buttonhole and hem stitch and cut and drawn work with needle lace filling stitches and hollie point. All edges of the sampler are hemmed. The upper section is made up of a conventional arrangement of bands of simple repeat patterns, alphabets, numerals and the inscription 'SVSANNA WILKINSON 1699'. All are worked in a light and limited palette of colours. A complete band of cutwork is worked just above the joints of the lower section, which comprises two narrow vertical strips of linen to either side and one along the bottom, forming a frame for the panel of needle lace and hollie point. The figurative panel of a male and female is not totally dependent on a cutwork grid; part is worked as freely made needle lace (punto in aria) and then inserted into the sampler. The two figures are divided by a band of hollie point inscribed '17 SW 00'. Numerals and coronets fill the final two bands of the sampler with a small repeat pattern worked vertically either side of the pictorial panel. object type: Mixed band sampler worked in polychrome silks depicting alphabets and numerals, stylized flowers, coronets and an inserted panel of needle lace with a male and female figure. title: sampler LICENSING --------- text license status: CC0 image license status: CC-BY-NC-SA OWNERSHIP --------- instutition: The Fitzwilliam Museum department: Applied Arts creditline: Bequeathed by Mrs H.A.
