This inscription is framed by a double carnation border which also frames the symmetrically arranged spot motifs placed on either side of the inscription. Like the inscription the pairs of spot motifs relate to Charles II. On either side of the title are worked two oak trees holding a crowned head of Charles II, a traditional reference to the Boscobel Oak and the events of the Civil War. Immediately below, another pair of oak trees each shading two figures which appear to be crowned, presumably represent another expression of Royalist sentiment. object type: Commemorative sampler worked in polychrome silks. The main part of the sampler is taken up by an inscription dedicated to Charles II, which is bordered by stylised trees, flowers and animals. title: sampler NOTES ----- type: history note value: Sotheby's, 16 March, 1944, lot 212; purchased for £9 with 9s. commission/premium?; invoice headed 26 King Street, London, and dated 17 March 1944, item no. 31411 LICENSING --------- text license status: CC0 image license status: CC-BY-NC-SA OWNERSHIP --------- instutition: The Fitzwilliam Museum department: Applied Arts creditline: Given by The Friends of The Fitzwilliam Museum STABLE URL ---------- url: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/id/object/110891 TECHNIQUES ---------- Woollen sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in cross and satin stitch. two edges are hemmed, and each side has a selvedge with double blue lines. weaving TECHNIQUES ---------- embroidering CATEGORIES ------ category: embroidery DATING ------ creation date: 1759 - 1759 creation date earliest: 1759 creation date latest: 1759 culture: 18th Century, Mid CREATORS -------- maker: Robertson, Sarah DIMENSIONS ---------- dimension: Length units: cm value: 33 dimension: Length units: in value: 12.5/8 dimension: Width units: cm value: 32 dimension: Width units: in value: 12.1/4 EXHIBITIONS HISTORY ------------------- title: English Samplers at the Fitzwilliam CITATIONS -------- English Samplers at the Fitzwilliam Fitzwilliam Museum Handbooks, Samplers --- IMAGES surrogate: large format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/aa/aa36/T_1_1944_1_201607_kly25_dc2.jpg height: 1024 pixels width: 1019 pixels surrogate: mid format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/aa/aa36/mid_T_1_1944_1_201607_kly25_dc2.jpg height: 502 pixels width: 500 pixels surrogate: original format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/aa/aa36/T_1_1944_1_201607_kly25_dc2.jpg height: 1024 pixels width: 1019 pixels surrogate: preview format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/aa/aa36/preview_T_1_1944_1_201607_kly25_dc2.jpg height: 251 pixels width: 250 pixels surrogate: large format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/portfolio/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C/506/669/large_T_1_1944_1_201607_kly25_mas.jpg height: 883 pixels width: 1024 pixels surrogate: mid format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/portfolio/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C/506/669/mid_T_1_1944_1_201607_kly25_mas.jpg height: 431 pixels width: 500 pixels surrogate: original location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/T.1-1944_1_201607_kly25_mas.tif surrogate: preview format: jpeg location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/portfolio/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C/506/669/preview_T_1_1944_1_201607_kly25_mas.jpg height: 216 pixels width: 250 pixels surrogate: zoom format: pyramid tiff location: https://data.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/imagestore/portfolio/F25982D9_7CB9_CFFF_028E_8BBFC531887C/506/669/T_1_1944_1_201607_kly25_mas.ptif height: 4629 pixels width: 5369 pixels
